CHARALAMBIDES

Despite occasional attempts by yardstick-makers to place them in any of the various genres that rose & fell in their musical proximity, Charalambides have remained dedicated to a vision of spiritual music (in all its forms) as transformative force. Their sound is uniquely personal and consistent, even through some outwardly extreme shifts in tactics.

Charalambides formed in Houston in 1991 amid a flock of fearlessly exploratory (and often drug-induced) rock bands, when Tom, Christina, and Kyle Silfer put down their beers and picked up their instruments. Eventually Kyle went home to New York, and Christina & Tom assumed the name Charalambides for what eventually turned into a flood of releases- beginning with 1992's Our Bed Is Green on their own Wholly Other label, and continuing with dozens of LPs, CDs, and cassettes on labels such as Siltbreeze, Eclipse, Time-Lag, and kranky.

Despite occasional stints as a trio (first with guitarist Jason Bill and then with pedal steel guitarist & vocalist Heather Leigh Murray) and flourishing solo projects, Charalambides remains constant as the core duo of Tom & Christina Carter.

From their 2006 & 2007 kranky releases A Vintage Burden & Likeness onwards, Charalambides has renewed their concentration on song-as-mantra (with intermittent guitar solos). But earlier recordings (like 2001's Unknown Spin) whisper of interstellar voids full of silence, or howl with ecstatically-received gnosis (2004's Joy Shapes).

Charalambides' live shows sometimes (and unpredictably) continue this latter thread, which often startles fans familiar only with the band's deceptively low-key reputation. Charalambides began playing sporadic gigs in 1992, making annual or semi-annual forays into other parts of the world from 1993 to 2005 (with the occasional year or two off). In 2006, Charalambides hit the road in earnest, touring the US/UK and making appearances at that year's Terrastock, Arthurfest and the Thurston Moore curated All Tomorrow's Parties: A Nightmare Before Christmas.

In 2008, after months of incessant solo and duo touring in the US and Europe, Tom settled in New York City, and Christina went to Austin, leaving touring aside (for a finite yet undetermined period of time) to concentrate on writing and recording. Their upcoming shows in Amsterdam and Hasselt (Belgium) are their first European performances since 2008.

Charalambides continue their recorded collaboration with Exile, a double LP of new recordings now available on kranky.

we are a MULTI-COLOURED PUDDING! And a dance-sinawi-pop-trio from London.

Gill: Gill is a multi-talented mastermind, in other words, she is actually clever, and pursuing a career in academia and book destruction(now there's an oxymoron). She used to be a goth. She is slowly turning into the true motivational and inspirational force behind Halo Halo, having joined after Jack and Rachel played a few nervous shows as a duo.

RACHEL: Rachel is a multi-coloured-multi-instr​umentalist. She digs into her Filipino heritage to find inspiration for songs, but she also cites bourbon biscuits as brain-food.

JACK: Jack has been educated in the Fine-arts. He nearly always considers 17th century Flemish painting when coming up with beats.

CHARALAMBIDES :

En dépit de quelques tentatives occasionnelles des étiqueteurs professionnels pour catégoriser Charalambides dans tel ou tel genre qui s'approche de leur musique, le groupe reste fidèle à une vision de musique spirituelle (sous toutes ses formes) comme force de transformation. Leur son est unique et consistant, malgré certaines variations de tactique extrêmes.

Charalambides se monte à Houston en 1991, au milieu d'une flopée de groupes de rock qui ne craignent pas l'exploration (ou la drogue), lorsque Tom, Christina et Kyle Silfer posent leurs bières et prennent leurs instruments. Kyle finit par rentrer à New York, et Christina & Tom conservent le nom Charalambides pour ce qui s'avère un torrent de sorties d'album - à commencer par Our Bed Is Green en 1992 sur leur propre label Wholly Other, suivi de douzaines de LPs, CDs, et cassettes sur des labels comme Siltbreeze, Eclipse, Time-Lag, et kranky.

Quelques expérimentations vers le trio (d'abord avec le guitariste Jason Bill puis avec la guitariste et chanteuse Heather Leigh Murray) et des projets solos prospères n'en font pas moins de Charalambides le duo durable de Tom & Christina Carter.

A partir de leurs sorties sur kranky en 2006 et 2007 - A Vintage Burden & Likeness - Charalambides renouvelle sa concentration sur la chanson-mantra (incluant par intermittence des solos de guitare). Mais des enregistrements plus anciens (Comme Unknown Spin, en 2001) sussurrent des vides interstellaires pleins de silence, ou hurlent extatiquement en pleine transcendance (Joy Shapes, 2004)

Les concerts de Charalambides poursuivent parfois (et de manière imprévisible) cette dernière veine, ce qui déstabilise souvent des fans qui ne connaissent que leur trompeuse réputation "low-key". Charalambides a commencé par de concerts sporadiques en 1992, annuels ou semi-annuels dans le reste du monde de 1993 à 2005 puis en 2006 ont tourné dans les USA/UK et sont apparus à Terrastock, Arthurfest et le All Tomorrows Parties organisé par Thurston Moore : A Nightmare before Christmas.

En 2008, après des mois de tournée incessante en solo ou en duo aux États Unis et en Europe, Tom s'installe à New York City et Christina part à Austin, abandonnant temporairement la tournée pour se recentrer sur l'écriture et l'enregistrement.

Ils enregistrent Exile, un double LP de nouveaux morceaux disponible sur kranky.

nous sommes un PUDDING MULTICOLORE ! Et un trio pop-dance-sinawi de Londres.

Gill : Gill est un génie aux multiples talents. Avant elle était Goth. Elle devient progressivement la force d'inspiration et de motivation derrière Halo Halo, ayant rejoint Jack et Rachel après quelques concerts nerveux en duo.

Rachel : Rachel est une multi instrumentiste multicolore. Elle s'inspire de son héritage philippin pour ses chansons mais cite aussi les biscuits au chocolat comme moteur.

Jack : Jack a fait les Beaux-Arts. Il pense presque toujours à la peinture flamande du 17e lorsqu'il trouve un rythme.
